Tell State Leaders:

Don’t let SF Transit die!

Without additional state funding this year, BART and Muni will face massive service cuts and fare increases, entering the “transit death spiral”

Yep, it’s as bad as it sounds:

🙅 Muni will cut 20 bus lines, starting with 1 line per month as soon as this summer

🙅 BART will cut weekend service entirely and close stations

🙅 Up to 50,000 people who take BART every day could instead drive into San Francisco, clogging our roads with even more traffic (or worse, staying home and slowing our downtown recovery)

Sen. Scott Wiener has proposed an addition of $5B to the state budget to fund transit operations. Much of this money would come from federal funds that President Biden has encouraged states to spend on transit operations, but which the state of California is planning to spend on highway projects 👎

The $5B required to save ALL transit STATEWIDE is LESS money than CalTrans plans to spend widening one section of Highway 37 from Marin to Napa.

The state funding is a one-time allocation, spread over five years, to local transit agencies to cover operating budgets that were decimated by changes in ridership during the pandemic. During COVID lockdowns and the pandemic, federal funding covered operating expenses, but now that funding is running out.

State funding will allow transit operators to maintain service and bring back riders while the Bay Area develops a regional funding plan and agencies restructure operations for a post-pandemic future.

The latest budget is inadequate to provide the funding transit needs. We need our leaders in Sacramento to fight for our future.

We need transit funding now. Our economic future (and the safety of our streets!) depends on it.

Take action today

Call our state leaders and ask them to fully fund transit operations in the state budget. The $2B currently in the Senate and Assembly budgets is borrowed from capital funding, and will not help our transit agencies avoid the death spiral.

What to say when you call

Here is a script you can use when you call these offices. You will most likely speak with a staffer or leave a voicemail. Be personal, with your own reasons for supporting transit, and please remember to be polite!

Hi, my name is xxxx and I am a California resident living in City. Public transportation is at major risk due to the pandemic. Thank you for stating your intention to not let transit fail. But the budget proposals would lead to massive service cuts that would strand people who depend on transit and keep the state from reaching our climate, equity and housing goals.

Say a reason why the collapse of transit would harm you and your community.

Please craft a budget solution that saves transit and opens a path toward a transit system that can serve Californians in the future.
