Slow Streets Stewards Urge SFMTA to Quickly Address Speeding on Slow Streets

Since 2021, KidSafe SF has worked to support a growing network of neighbors across San Francisco who are committed to making their Slow Streets into vibrant and safe public spaces. These Slow Streets Stewards meet regularly to share ideas about improving Slow Streets, trade notes on Telraam data, and work together to support new policy for the Slow Streets network. These dedicated volunteers enhance our neighborhoods by organizing community events and promoting accessibility for all users.

The Slow Streets Stewards last week sent a letter to SFMTA urging the agency to act quickly to implement traffic calming measures, such as diverters and roadway narrowing. They also recommend upgrading street signs and ensuring regular evaluations to maintain safety standards.

The letter was based on data from the network of Telraam devices on Slow Streets showing that several streets in the Slow Streets program are not meeting safety targets. Excessive vehicle volumes and speeds threaten the safety of all users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.

KidSafe SF echoes these calls for immediate action. Prioritizing the safety and comfort of all street users is essential for creating livable, enjoyable neighborhoods. We urge the SFMTA to implement these recommendations promptly, ensuring San Francisco’s Slow Streets are safe and welcoming for everyone.
